SALAMANCA

From a distance the glowing sandstone of the city of Salamanca can be seen. Situated on three hills, the towers of Salamanca appear to welcome visitors at first light. This old Castillian town lies on the bank of the Rio Tormes, 200 km from Madrid and just 90 km from Portugal.

Salamanca was originally a Roman fort. In the 6th Century, under the Visigoths it became a diocesan town. In the 8th Century, the town was conquered by the Arabs. After being reconquered 400 years later, the town developed into the religious centre of Spain.

There are three universities in Salamanca: the University of Literature, the Papal University and the Dominican University (one of the oldest in Europe). These universities give the city its own special character. The Spanish spoken here is pure and accent free Castillano and is spoken and understood throughout the world.

Today Salamanca is a cosmopolitan town visited by language students from all corners of the globe. Here you can experience modern Spain within ancient walls, which is agreeable combination of both pleasure and study. Salamanca is famous for its unique nightlife and relaxed and open atmosphere.
